Project countries

Green growth

If you have a climate project, either turnkey or in the development phase, we may be able to help you implement it. KIF invests in projects that, directly or indirectly, contribute to reducing GHG emissions. We can participate with share capital for establishment of businesses in cooperation with Danish companies, or we can participate as a co-investor in larger climate projects that include Danish technology or know-how. For KIF to participate your project must be commercially sustainable and use known climate technology.

Africa’s largest wind farm

The Lake Turkana Wind Power project will be the largest wind park in sub-Saharan Africa. The 300MW wind farm will produce around 20 per cent of Kenya’s current installed electricity generating capacity at a very cost efficient price and will replace fuel imports of approximately EUR 120m annually.

The Lake Turkana site was selected because of the remoteness of the area and the strong predictable wind streams between Lake Turkana and the desert hinterland.

The Danish company Vestas is to supply the 365 wind turbines based on the model V52-850kW with a three-blade rotor and a diameter of 52 metres. This is a very robust and efficient wind turbine and therefore perfect for installation at a location like Lake Turkana.

In addition to the wind farm, a 428 km double circuit 400kW transmission line to deliver the electricity from the wind farm to the national grid is to be constructed, and 200 kilometres of access road need to be upgraded.

The Male Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) provides drinking water and sewerage services to the greater Male region with a population of around 150,000 people.

Producing clean drinking water from seawater is very energy intensive, and the power used by MWSC is based on a number of diesel plants, which is very costly. Therefore MWSC has an interest in lowering the share of diesel-based energy by using PV solar cells as a substitute.

The Danish Climate Investment Fund has engaged in investing in PV solar plants that are to be installed on the roofs of buildings owned by MWSC. The PV solar plants will reduce energy cost and reduce the CO2 emission considerably.

Nordic Power Partners, a development company owned 49% by the Danish Climate Investment Fund, will build and manage the solar plants. Return on investment is based on a long term power purchase agreement.

A greater focus on green solutions in China and a target of 500 bioethanol plants to be built by 2020 has led DONG Energy to explore the market potential for their second generation bioethanol in China. Read more

In cooperation with the Danish Climate Investment Fund, DONG Energy has established a joint venture that will promote the bio-based Inbicon technology in China, engage in the development of bioethanol plants and render services to them.

The technology, which has been developed in Denmark, is based on transforming straw and stems from corn and cane into bioethanol that can be used as fuel in cars, for example. To utilise the technology, DONG Energy needs access to raw material and investors willing to finance the construction of bioethanol plants.

The Danish Climate Investment Fund will decide on a case by case basis to invest in specific plants in joint venture with Chinese partners that have acquired an Inbicon license. DONG Energy is ready to plough back their license fee in the first couple of plants to secure a swift start in erecting bioethanol plants in China.
